Drinking Water and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) / Dementia
  • Aluminum Levels: Studies have suggested that high levels of aluminum in drinking water, often above 0.1 mg/L, may be associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline, especially when water is acidic (lower pH) and lacks silica.
  • Water Hardness and Softness: Research has shown that soft to moderately hard water (lower in calcium and magnesium) may present a higher risk of vascular dementia compared to hard water. A 2025 study found that water hardness levels between 0–120 mg/L could elevate the incidence risk of Alzheimer's and vascular dementia.
  • Protective Factors: Higher concentrations of silica (≥11.25 mg/L) in drinking water have been associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Lead & Other Toxins: Lead, mercury, and arsenic in water are linked to memory issues and cognitive decline, with lead exposure specifically linked to dementia risk.
